VTT/MSI CENTER FOR BIOENGINEERING

Vision: Further the quantitative scientific agenda through two linked programs that tackle large-scale public challenges

1) Engineer biological functions for the production of bio-based chemicals and proteins

2) Engineer technologies and platforms for the detection of toxins, chemicals and biological markers or agents of disease

The VTT/MSI Center for Bioengineering sits at the crossroads of molecular and cell biology, systems biology, and synthetic biology. We are integrating expertise from many disciplines to improve environmentally-friendly biological production of chemicals, such as organic acids. Our work spans basic single-cell studies of how cells measure, process, and transmit information about their environments, and how different cells in a population vary in their metabolic behaviors, to applied efforts to engineer biological circuits that modify cell-to-cell variation in bio-based chemical production to optimize overall yields and efficiencies. We are also developing ultra-sensitive biological sensors of chemicals, proteins, and other complex biological molecules such as carbohydrates for rapidly and effectively detecting infectious agents and toxins, and for diagnosing disease states very early in their progression when medical treatments can be much more effective. Through this and future work, the Center for Bioengineering strives to contribute to our understanding of biology and how to engineer it to improve human health and positively impact society.

The VTT/MSI Center for Bioengineering includes two collaborative research projects between researchers at the VTT/MSI Molecular Sciences Institute (MSI) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
